Some of the rare animals seen at Argrennan regularly...
Heard drumming in the trees…
The delightful noise coming from under the canopy of leaves means only one thing, the woodpeckers are hard at work. The view from the kitchen window means one can enjoy a close up, undisturbed look at these outstanding little birds. The best months for spotting the woodpeckers are January to June.
Spotted foraging around the garden…
The red squirrel is native to Britain, but its future is increasingly uncertain as the introduced American grey squirrel expands its range across the mainland. There are estimated to be only 140,000 red squirrels left in Britain, with over 2.5 million greys. A small family have recently moved to the Argrennan estate and are taking up residence in the woodland.
A rare and majestic sight….
This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail. It was saved from national extinction by one of the world's longest running protection programs, and has now been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland. It is an Amber List species because of its historical decline. At Argrennan we are lucky enough to provide a home for a whole family of these rare birds, which are frequently monitored for an on-going protection program.
Boxing in the garden?...
It’s not unusual to glimpse a Hare in the gardens at Argrennan, the extremely fast moving animal can run to speeds of up to 35mph so fast eyes are essential! They love exploring the undergrowth towards the walled garden but are incredibly shy. An exciting sight nevertheless.
Stand and Stare…
Perhaps our favourite sight at Argrennan is the stillness and glare of a Stag in the fields nearby, Carefully watching the garden this majestic animal stands proudly listening to every movement. Although quite common to the picturesque scenery of Scotland, Red Deer are unquestionably the perfect icon of Scotland. The best time to spot Deer skulking around the estate are the Autumn months.
